چکیده

We present a high resolution, SparsePak two-dimensional velocity field for the center of the low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy DDO 39. These data are a significant improvement on previous H I or Hα long slit data, yet the inner rotation curve is still uncertain due to significant noncircular and random motions. These intrinsic uncertainties, probably present in other LSB galaxies too, result in a wide range of inner slopes being consistent with the data, including those expected in cold dark matter (CDM) simulations. The halo concentration parameter provides a more useful test of cosmological models than the inner slope as it is more tightly constrained by observations. DDO 39’s concentration parameter is consistent with, but on the low end of the distribution predicted by CDM. Subject headings: galaxies: dwarfs — galaxies: halos — galaxies: kinematics and dynamics

The Dwarf Galaxy Ddo 47 as a Dark Matter Laboratory: Testing Cusps Hiding in Triaxial Halos and the Mond Paradigm

We present an analysis of high resolution HI data of the dwarf galaxy DDO 47, aimed at testing the hypothesis that dark halo triaxiality might induce non-circular motions resulting in rotation curves best fitted by cored halos, even if the dark matter halo is intrinsically cuspy. This hypothesis has been invoked in order to reconcile the predictions of the ΛCDM theory with the rotation curves o...

Does Low Surface Brightness Mean Low Density?

We compare the dynamical properties of two galaxies at identical positions on the Tully-Fisher relation, but with different surface brightnesses. We find that the low surface brightness galaxy UGC 128 has a higher mass-to-light ratio, and yet has lower mass densities than the high surface brightness galaxy NGC 2403. This is true for the gas surface density, the stellar surface density, and the ...

The spatial and age distribution of stellar populations in DDO 190 1

The spatial distribution of stellar populations, the star formation history, and other properties of the dIrr galaxy DDO 190 have been analyzed using color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of about 3900 resolved stars and the H α fluxes of H ii regions. From the mean color index of the red giant branch, a mean metallicity [Fe/H] = −2.0 is obtained. The I magnitude of the TRGB has been used to estimate...

A MORPHOLOGICAL-TYPE DEPENDENCE IN THE μ0–log h PLANE OF SPIRAL GALAXY DISKS

We present observational evidence for a galaxy ‘Type’ dependence to the location of a spiral galaxy’s disk parameters in the μ0–log h plane. With a sample of ∼40 Low Surface Brightness galaxies (both bulgeand disk-dominated) and ∼80 High Surface Brightness galaxies, the early-type disk galaxies (≤Sc) tend to define a bright envelope in the μ0–logh plane, while the late-type (≥Scd) spiral galaxi...

The Distribution of Atomic Hydrogen Around Two Irregular Galaxies

We present radio interferometric observations of two irregular galaxies that were candidates for having unusually extended HI emission. The galaxies, UGC 199 and DDO 26, otherwise appeared to be normal, low-luminosity systems with modest star-formation rates. To a detection limit of 2–3×10 cm at a resolution of about 50, however, the HI around neither galaxy is unusually extended compared to ot...
